Jason Gill. When I first met Jason Gill, I had only been living in the city for about one month. I walked in the back room of Prohibition NYC with the goal of finding a quieter spot for me to tune my guitar and practice my tune a bit before going up in my slot at the Monday night Open Mic. I was a bit startled as I looked up to find another singer-songwriter there saying how he too was trying to get tuned up for his performance. When I first met Jason Gill, I had only been living in the city for about one month. I still was at a place where I still hadn’t found a community of singer-songwriters, and I hadn’t made enough friends to feel NYC was my home. It felt nice to be greeted by a warm person, with a friendly smile and nice vibe about him. That night he brought his acoustic guitar onstage and sang Michael Jackson’s Dirty Diana. I stood there impressed and surprised by his unique tone and incredible range!
To my great happiness, I later found out that Jason Gill also wrote his own original tunes, which I began to learn more and more about, and enjoy more and more. Jason Gill loves all sorts of music: rock, funk, soul, R&B, folk, pop, you name it! And he claims to be influenced by all of them. We can hear in his music his versatile genre background, but the overall thread between all his creations would be those smooth tenor vocals, and groovin’ rhythmic guitar accompaniments. Jason likes to hang with his electric guitar often, but I also love hearing Jason on the acoustic once in a blue moon as he explores his softer side.
Jason has performed in several New York music venues from the West Village to the LES (lower east side) to Harlem, as well as a few favorite neighborhood venues in Queens.
In 2013 Jason shot a music video for his original song ‘Little Black Dress’ working with Harry McEwan (director), Taylor Kenny (director of photography) and Athan Hilaki (Trapped In Static, Red Thumb Tack Studios).
In 2014 Jason released his debut EP, Passion’s Prisoner, produced by Andre Pilette (Imunuri, Boroko, Level 11 Studio). Passion’s Prisoner is available now on iTunes, Bandcamp, CD Baby, Google Play, Spotify, Amazon, ReverbNation, and with several other digital distributors.
Jason is currently in the studio working with incredible NYC based producer, Swang (www.rspexperiment.com) on his next project. They are recording this next project to tape at Mighty Toad Studio in Brooklyn (www.mightytoad.com).
